Have the option to move to the next/previous game in the game edit window

Currently when editing a lot of games for a platform (the bulk edit feature notwithstanding), you have go into the edit window for one game, come out again, select the next game, then go to the edit window for that game.

It would be great if in the game edit window there were forward and back arrows to take the user to the next or previous game in the list. This would save a lot of time when editing games.

    Hi Folks,

With today’s release of 13.25, this feature has now been implemented. The Edit Game window now includes Next/Previous buttons, allowing you to quickly navigate through the list you opened it from

Thanks for bearing with us while we got this implemented. For more info on this release, check out the summary here:

I was going to submit something similar. Here’s a user story with acceptance criteria that I drafted — sharing in case it helps flesh out the request or provide a starting point for discussion.

    Next/Previous Buttons

As a LaunchBox user managing game metadata, I want the ability to move directly to the next or previous game from within the game edit window so that I can quickly edit multiple games in sequence without repeatedly exiting and reopening the editor.

    Acceptance Criteria

    1. Navigation Controls

      • The game edit window includes “Next” and “Previous” navigation arrows or buttons.

      • Controls are clearly visible and accessible in the edit window UI.

    2. Sequential Behavior

      • Selecting “Next” loads the edit window for the next game in the current platform/game list order.

      • Selecting “Previous” loads the edit window for the previous game in the current platform/game list order.

    3. Boundary Conditions

      • If the user is on the last game in the list, the “Next” button is disabled or hidden.

      • If the user is on the first game in the list, the “Previous” button is disabled or hidden.

    4. Save Reliability

      • Clicking “Next” or “Previous” automatically saves the current game, confirms the save is successful, then loads the next record.

      • If the save fails, navigation does not occur, and an error message is displayed to prevent data corruption.

    5. UI Refresh Handling

      • The main LaunchBox UI behind the edit modal does not refresh or lose state until the user clicks OK to close the edit window.

    6. Selection State

      • When the user clicks OK to exit the edit window, the last edited record remains highlighted in the main UI.

    7. Playlist Context

      • If editing from a playlist, “Next” and “Previous” should either:

        • Navigate only within the playlist’s game entries, or

        • Be disabled if playlist navigation cannot safely handle multiple table saves.

    8. Cross-Platform Context

      • If editing from a multi-platform filter (e.g., All Platforms), navigation may be disabled or constrained to avoid performance issues with very large lists.

    9. Consistency with Filters/Sorting

      • Navigation order respects the same sorting/filtering applied in the main game list.

    10. Performance

      • Navigating between games should not introduce more than a brief delay (target: under 2 seconds per save/load cycle).

    11. Context

      • The edit window should display list position (e.g., “Game 12 of 54”) if possible, to provide navigation context.

      • If this cannot be done within current UI constraints, the design team should explicitly decide whether “blind” navigation is acceptable.

To further comment on details on how this could work, could be to just add an indicator at the top of the bulk edit box “Game 3/50” to know where you are.

As far as saving changes to each game… at the end of say “50” games that you’ve gone through, you could have a pop-up dialog box at the end of the 50th game showing a list of changes that were made. At that point, you could “Save All” or de-select certain games from the list where changes were made.

    Opening to the community.

    My 2 cents here:

When a user currently chooses OK, the changes need to get saved. This is why there’s a small load when this happens. For this feature to work, hitting the next or back buttons would also require the save action, causing a small delay for each time you click on the button potentially making this feature slow, laggy, and undesirable.

There will also be no visual context for the user to understand where they seem to be in their list, so the longer you stay in this mode the further away from being able to understand or know where you are in your game list or how many games there are to go. Basically it will become a surprise as to which games would then appear when using these options. In order to solve this problem a complete rework of this window would need to happen, however that’s not what this request is about.

Good points. One workaround would be to only save them all when the user finally clicks OK - not after every “next” click (if that is possible). If not, then hopefully it would still be quicker than clicking ok, selecting the next game, and going to edit. It’s true that you’d have to keep up with where you are in the list. It would be a great way to edit individual games quickly though.
