Markdown Support in Notes Field

📋 Summary

Add optional Markdown support to the Notes field in LaunchBox, enabling users to better organize and format large amounts of information using headings, lists, emphasis, and links.

🎯 Feature Overview

  • Support a limited set of Markdown syntax:

    • # Headings, bold, italic, - Lists, [Links](url)

  • Markdown rendering would be opt-in, activated by a specific tag at the beginning of the notes (e.g. <!--markdown-->).

  • No live preview required—rendering happens only in display views (e.g. game details panel).

🛠 Use Case

A user adds detailed notes for a game, including walkthrough steps, character tips, and links to external resources. Using Markdown allows them to structure the content clearly, making it easier to read and reference.

📦 Benefits

  • Makes long-form notes more readable and useful

  • Encourages richer documentation of games

  • Keeps compatibility with existing notes content

    Hi there!

Thanks so much for submitting this request and for taking the time to explain your use case — that context is always super helpful.

I’ve gone ahead and fleshed out the main idea using the info you provided, and I’m opening it up to the community for further discussion and feedback. Please let me know if this fleshed-out version doesn’t match your original intended request.

Feel free to let me know if you have any extra thoughts, examples, or edge cases you think might be relevant!

    Cheers,
    The LaunchBox team

      Hello!

No, this pretty much reflects what I was going for, including the list of tags that should cover most use cases.

The only other markdown tag I could think of for being useful would be inline and multi-line code tags (`…` and ``` … ```) if, for example, you wanted to give the user a list of commands and have them stand out as actual commands by being in a monospace font - just like the tool bar in this very comment field has (</>).

      E.g.

To create a boot disk, type

      format a:
      sys a:
  • Retrofrogg

Yes, I’ve been asking for this; this would indeed be very useful.

It would be great to have (at least basic) Markdown support for the Notes field to make it more structured, especially when there is a lot of information - headings, bold/italic, lists might be enough; maybe hyperlinks.

The question, of course, is what happens to existing note fields if they happen to contain markdown-like content; this could be solved by requiring a specific tag at the start of the notes that turn markdown mode on.

The other question is whether a (live?) preview of the result is needed. In my opinion: no.

    Thank you for your consideration.
