Lossless Scaling Integration with LaunchBox

Overview

Lossless Scaling is a powerful Windows-based tool (available on Steam) that uses AI-based frame generation and integer scaling to improve performance and visual quality in retro and modern games. Currently, it must be manually launched and configured, often through macros or startup profiles, which breaks the seamless “one-click launch” experience that LaunchBox is known for.

This request is to integrate Lossless Scaling directly into LaunchBox, enabling users to launch games with predefined scaling profiles automatically—no manual launching or switching apps required.

Proposed Features

1️⃣ Automatic Launching with ROMs

• When launching a game from LaunchBox or Big Box, allow LaunchBox to automatically launch Lossless Scaling in the background (if it’s not already running).

• Once the game window is detected, LaunchBox could trigger the scaling macro or point Lossless Scaling to the right preset.

2️⃣ Game-by-Game Configuration

• In each game’s metadata or edit menu, add an option to:

• Enable/disable Lossless Scaling

• Select a profile or scaling mode (e.g., Integer Scaling, LSFG for frame generation, etc.)

• Optionally specify custom commands or flags if advanced users want full control.

3️⃣ Profile Recognition & Management

• LaunchBox could look for existing Lossless Scaling profiles stored on disk and allow users to associate them with games manually.

• Bonus: Provide a way to import/export profiles within LaunchBox for easy sharing or backup.

4️⃣ Optional Steam Integration

• If Lossless Scaling must be launched via Steam, LaunchBox could optionally use a custom Steam URI handler (e.g., steam://rungameid/...) to open it quietly in the background.

Use Cases

🎮 Retro titles with low native resolutions where integer scaling improves clarity

🎮 Low-framerate games where frame generation helps smooth gameplay

🎮 Portable setups (e.g., Steam Deck, mini PCs) where performance and visual quality need balance

🎮 Users aiming for seamless, polished launching workflows without needing to open extra tools

    Hey Spongebob5,

Thanks for reaching out with your suggestion about integrating lossless scaling. I’d love to understand more about your idea! Could you share some specific use cases or scenarios where you’d like to see this feature in action? Knowing how you envision using it can really help us explore its potential.

Looking forward to hearing more from you!

      Certainly, thank you

If you know what lossless scaling is, please skip this section, otherwise, lossless scaling is a frame generation tool that you can turn on in any window to achieve higher framerate with a relatively low performance cost through very good AI, it looks pretty great. Usually it is activated in the program you have selected with a macro you can choose. I’m not sure if links are allowed, so the official page is on steam.

I would like to be able open a game and not have to also either open, or have lossless scaling already open. And being able to go game by game and choose from the options in lossless scaling. Lossless scaling already has built in “game profiles” which I wouldn’t be upset creating my own in lossless scaling and importing them into launchbox manually (somehow). Launchbox’s draw has been to create a completely seamless, all in one platform where i never feel like i need to open another program whenever i think “game.” lossless scaling, to my knowledge, is only on steam which requires me to open steam to access it unless i pinned it to the start menu.
