Add More Image Categories for Platforms

Overview

Currently, when adding media to a platform (not to individual games), LaunchBox supports only a limited set of image categories:

  • Banner

  • Clear Logo

  • Default 3D Box

  • Default 3D Cart

  • Default Box

  • Default Cart

  • Device

  • Fanart

Users who want to add additional media—such as controller images, manuals, accessories, or platform packaging—have no choice but to assign them to the generic “Device” category, which becomes a catch-all and undermines proper organization.

Request

Add the following new image types specifically for platforms:

• 📦 Platform Box (optionally split into box-front, box-back, box-3D, and box-full)

• 🎮 Controller

• 🎛️ Accessories

• 📘 Manual

Additionally, introduce a rotatable 3D model for the platform’s retail box, similar to the game box feature—ideally supporting all 6 sides (front, back, top, bottom, left, right). These assets are already available online, and since most platforms only have one or two box variants (per region), this is highly feasible.

Use Cases

  • ✅ Proper categorization: Users can organize and audit platform media more effectively without misusing the “Device” tag.

  • ✅ Big Box integration: These new image types could be referenced in custom Big Box themes, allowing theme creators to display rich, detailed visuals for consoles.

  • ✅ Nostalgia and preservation: Many collectors value original hardware packaging, manuals, and accessories—this feature helps digitally preserve that experience.

  • ✅ Cleaner user experience: With clearly defined categories, media browsing becomes more intuitive and visually satisfying.

Hiya! Thanks for the request here, I agree it would be nice to have more images for platforms, however, I’m curious as to your intended use case for having these as their own category.

Apart from the obvious categorisation advantages when viewing platform media, do you see any other way you can use these images in their own categories? I.e would you want to use these image types in Big Box themes? Or something else?

If you can let us know how you intend to use this we can flesh out this request and open it up to the community.

    Cheers,

      Hi,

The main reason is that it just feels wrong to tag all those other image types as “device” lol.

But yes, it would also be useful for other reasons - in terms of ordering the images by category, being able to audit for those image types, and yes having those images in BigBox themes would be excellent also.

    No way.

It's time to stop promoting more image categories in general without covering the essential ones. One of the problems with the database is that many unclear additional categories have been created for fan art without completing others necessary to include all the real art (ahem ahem 4 box spines...) or some that allow fan art and real media to be clearly separated. We need 3D box fan art, clear logo fan art, and reconstructed cart before flooding the database with more extra categories.

You’ve misunderstood the feature request - this is to do with platforms, not games.

    This idea is cool

I will love to see more category types.

    There is my list:

2.5D - Box Art, Cart, Fanart, Reconstructed etc.

    Sprite Sheets

Cassette, Floppy and other types of physical media

Character - Concept Art, Fanart, Official Art etc.

    Cart - Top and Bottom

I will waiting for the tag system and i will add tag in some images on the database because they are some fanart box art 3d that people wasn’t deleting
