Add Multimedia Features and Windows Apps for Launchbox

Another idea that i see in Bitbucket and i talked Astrobob for this is the Multimedia in Launchbox (movies, series, cartoons, comics, light novel, soundtrack, music, manga, anime, commercials etc) and Windows Apps (Adobe Photoshop, LibreOffice, Opera GX etc). It would be great for everyone because this would make Launchbox a universal frontend.

With the 14.X update and the PDF reader implemented into Launchbox, I feel like it is an excellent time to revisit this feature. Launchbox already has the infrastructure from the platform/organization tree, the new built in pdf reader that simulates page turns, the 3D box options that can be modded to work with books - this is all excellent stuff that no other reader/library can do, not to mention this can bridge the gap between all the other media types.

I also want to stress that if you consider the existing launchbox infrastructure, only LaunchBox is primed to manage ALL your media in one spot, and if Launchbox becomes the everything app for organizing your media, it would become the de-facto app to use.

This isn’t really a good idea. Technically, you can already do this, with a lot of manual work. But you’re opening a big can of worms with just adding official full support for movies and TV shows etc. I use tinyMediaManager for this to basically do what LaunchBox does for video games. tMM has a ton of features and is constantly in development and full of features that would eventually be asked for in LB if movies and TV shows were officially supported. With all other multimedia mentioned, it would cause a lot of bloat in LaunchBox and could possibly affect actual gameplay. As far as music goes, there’s already MusicBox that was decided that it should be separate from the games (LB). There’s also already front-ends for organizing ebooks and comics. Using tinyMediaManager to organize a Kodi library for movies, TV shows, music videos etc… is the equivalent to using LaunchBox to organize a game library for BigBox. I think LB venturing away from focusing on being the go-to for a video game library isn’t a good path.

Thanks for the request! A better way to manage multimedia is definitely a popular suggestion, but I’d love to hear more about the Windows apps side of things (I’ll probably split that into a separate request if that’s okay).

While you can technically add manual games and point them to Windows applications, could you elaborate on your end goal? Is it simply to have all your applications in one place that you can launch from?

Since LaunchBox is primarily focused on gaming, it’s unlikely we’d create workflows specifically for non-gaming apps like these—but we’re definitely keen to hear your use case, in case there’s something we’re missing or something that can already be addressed.

My goal is to add the import for multimedia files and other files (mp4, mp3, mkv, jpg etc), add some scrappers for multimedia (IMDB, TMDB, TVDB, GoodReads, etc), add Gamepad support to control and add some images support and videos for playlist (Example for Movies and TV Series, i will use the Bluray, DVD or poster cover art, Logos, etc. for Music i will use the Album Cover, etc. and for videos support, Movies for example i will use for company collection, trilogy collection, franchise collection etc.) and for Windows apps, i will use to navigate for some apps (the import for other files is useful because he have a exe support), add some images (Covers, Logos etc.) just like SteamGridDB. and a Database support because they have so many apps that a database would be helpful for navigate apps and add more easily.

I’d like to add to this, because I actually use Launchbox exactly like this. Primarily for gaming of course, but with sections for manga, books, movies, etc that lead to other programs and files manually. Now, I don’t expect you guys to have built in support for scraping of these materials (though it would be awesome in the case of movies and TV Shows if it was possible, as I have put far too much work into doing it manually). I have been using it like this for some years now, and while I have mostly enjoyed putting the work in for it, it does eat into an insane amount of my free time. I would love something more easy to use or scrape with like Plex does, I don’t need like a built in video player or anything, just a scraper would be awesome for the information and images end!!
